Standard mass loaded vinyl, commonly referred to as MLV or acoustic barrier, is used in a number of applications and assemblies for both interior and exterior installations. The 1 LB weight is the most common version of MLV used as it provides a good balance between performance, ease of installation, and cost per square foot. The 2 LB weight is most often used when additional mass is required or in projects attempting to isolate sound that is lower in frequency. The 1/2 LB weight has a more specific application in curtains and other installations requiring a solid, but lightweight acoustic barrier.
This material won't shrink, rot, or cause metal corrosion. It also resists adverse environmental conditions and UV light.
Common applications for regular mass loaded vinyl:
- Other general commercial use
- Exterior fences
This material is not intended for low frequency sound transfer or footfall impact noise transfer. Our QuietImpact rubber underlayment is recommended instead.
*Samples are not available for this material. Other roll sizes or partial rolls are not available.

Installation of mass loaded vinyl is simple in any application. Wherever the material is installed, it must be installed solid, with no gaps. Any gaps in the barrier should be caulked with any brand caulk and taped over with a standard duct tape or foil tape.
Roll the material flat, butt the seams together, and tape with a standard duct tape or foil tape found at any hardware store. Caulk the perimeter to create a solid installation from corner to corner.
WALLS, CEILINGS, OR OTHER HARD SURFACES
To fasten MLV in both interior and exterior applications, use standard drywall screws or nails with a thin washer, or a roofer's nail (with pre-attached plastic or metal washer piece). A staple gun with a wide crown is also quick and effective way of fastening MLV. All seams should be butted together if the material must lay flat or slightly overlapped when possible. Caulk all perimeters, including around outlets or other protrusions.
AROUND PIPES, DUCT, AND SIMILAR APPLICATIONS
MLV should be wrapped tight to the surface, overlap the seams slightly, and tape the seam with a standard duct tape or foil tape found at any hardware store. If taping the seams to hold the MLV in place is not an option, you can use an aerosol adhesive like 3M Super 77 or similar. This can also be purchased at any hardware store.
